A patient on 15 mg who metabolizes the drug slowly via the CYP2D6 enzyme pathway may experience more pronounced effects than someone on 20 mg who metabolizes it efficiently. Untreated or undertreated psychiatric illness carries its own set of risks behind the wheel. The goal of treatment, including medication, is to improve overall functioning and safety. In many cases, appropriately managed psychiatric conditions result in meaningfully safer drivers than the same individuals would be without treatment. This context matters when patients weigh the risks and benefits of medication.
